The Bedford Hours, France, ca. 1423
London, British Library. Additional Ms. 18850, fol. 16v
The lavish decoration of the Bedford Hours includes thirty-eight large miniatures and more than twelve hundred tiny marginal illustrations of subjects taken mainly from Old and New Testaments. The miniature reproduced here, representing the later episodes in the story of Noah, is third in a distinct sequence of four, each covering an entire page, bound into the manuscript between the calendar and the beginning of the main text. All four of these miniatures are devoted to events described within the first eleven chapters of the Book of Genesis.
